CALL FOR PAPERS:

In 1492, Granada, the last Islamic state in the Iberian Peninsula, was recovered by the Spanish Catholic Monarchs, Fernando and Isabel, during what is known as the Reconquista. This event would drastically change the future of the Muslims that chose to stay in the Peninsula. A century later, the descendants of the once powerful Muslims became marginalized, persecuted and eventually were forced to convert to Christianity. Eventually, the tensions between Old Christians and Moriscos (or New Christians; that is, Spanish Muslims converted to Christianity, would lead to the expulsion of the latter at the beginning of the 17th century.

This panel looks for papers that analyze the situation of Spanish Moriscos before and after their expulsion from the Iberian Peninsula in 1609 and 1614. Different approaches and perspectives are welcomed.
The panel intends to discuss issues related, but not limited to, the following topics:
– Moriscos’ destinations after the expulsion.
– Obstacles and adversities faced by Moriscos at their arrival in the new lands.
– Moriscos’ life and occupation in the Iberian Peninsula and/or in the lands where
they arrived after the expulsion.
– Moriscos’ artistic and literary expressions before and after their expulsion
– Relationship between Old Christians and Moriscos at the time surrounding the
expulsion (i.e., social and cultural exchange)
– Representation of Moriscos by Old Christians in Spanish texts.
– Moriscos self-representation / self-defense during the time surrounding the
expulsion.
– Christianity vs. Islam in 16th and 17th century Spain.

Please send an abstract of 300-400 words to Lisette Balabarca (lbalabarca@siena.edu)
by Wednesday, February 10th. Emails of acceptance/non-acceptance will be sent by
February 13th. Accepted panelists will need to register for the 2016 MESA
conference (in Boston) by the panel submission deadline of February 16th.
