La Facultad de Humanidades de la Universidad de Leiden ofrece un trabajo a jornada completa como «lectureship» en Antropología y Estudios Islámicos, con especial atención a Marruecos. El periodo de trabajo es de 3 años, de agosto de 2016 a junio de 2019, con una salario bruto de entre 3.400€- 4.654€ al mes (según el sueldo establecido para la escala 11).
Las tareas que tendrá que desarrollar el lectureship son:
- Realizar investigaciones originales y difundir los resultados de estas a través de los medios adecuados.
- Enseñar en los programas de grado y máster de Estudios de Oriente Próximo, el grado en Estudios Internacionales, además de en otros programas y cursos. También deberá dirigir trabajos final de grado y trabajos final de máster. Los cursos que tendrá que enseñar serán: antropología de Oriente Próximo, antropología de las sociedades musulmanas; Historia, sociedad e Islam en Marruecos; Teorías y métodos para el estudio del Oriente Próximo; Cultura en el Oriente Próximo.
- Realizar tareas administrativas
- Representar al campo de investigación hacia un público externo.

Key responsibilities
• Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels;
• Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels in the BA and MA programs in Middle-Eastern Studies, the BA in International Studies, and other programs and courses as appropriate; supervision of BA and MA theses; contributions to curriculum development. Courses may include anthropology of the Middle East; anthropology of Muslim societies; History, Society, and Islam in Morocco; Theories and Methods in Middle-Eastern Studies; Culture of/in the Modern Middle East;
• Administrative duties;
• Representation of the field to external audiences and media.
Selection Criteria
• A PhD degree in a relevant field. Candidates near completion of the degree will be considered;
• A research and publication record that is commensurate with career stage;
• Research experience in the Middle East, including anthropological fieldwork;
• Commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide teaching scope in terms of content;
• Specialist knowledge of Morocco and survey knowledge of the Middle East at large; affinity with Middle-Eastern Studies and with a vision of area studies as the nexus of disciplinary and regional expertise; the ability to work from interdisciplinary, transnational, and comparative perspectives;
• Advanced proficiency in Moroccan Arabic. Proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic is an advantage;
• An excellent command of English. The relevant MA programs and the BA program in International Studies are offered in English, and English may be used in the BA in Middle-Eastern Studies as well;
• If the successful applicant doesn’t speak Dutch, the possibility of University-funded language training may be considered;
• Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the successful applicant may be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs).
The Faculty of Humanities and the LIAS
Since its founding in 1575, Leiden University has built an internationally recognized record of excellence in teaching and research. The Faculty of Humanities is an international center for the study of languages, cultures, arts, and societies worldwide, in their historical contexts from prehistory to the present. We take culture broadly to include religions, philosophies, and worldviews as well as literature art, and technology. In research and teaching, we focus on Dynamics of Diversity, meaning the mobility of people, language, culture, ideas, art, and institutions in a globalizing world, and their interconnectivity through the ages. The lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS). LIAS is comprised of a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies, with international staff and student populations. The institute is committed to a present-day vision of area studies, integrating disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives on a solid foundation of excellent language skills. The Lecturer will teach in Middle-Eastern Studies, International Studies, and other programs and courses as required. Current staff in Middle-Eastern Studies have expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archeology, Art & Visual Studies, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Material Culture Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Political Economy, and Religious Studies. The local research environment includes a world-class library, and is enhanced by the Leiden University Center for the Study of Islam and Society (LUCIS), and the National Museums of Ethnography (RMV) and Antiquities (RMO).

Depending on qualifications, the lecturer may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
