Description

The School of Modern Languages in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Arabic language and culture with preferred competence in modern Arabic literature, cinema, media, or digital humanities and/or interdisciplinary Middle East and North African Studies (MENAS). The anticipated start date is August 2019. The candidate’s qualifications should include (1) the PhD in Arabic or related field, with native or near-native fluency in both Modern Standard Arabic and at least one Arabic dialect; (2) an excellent scholarly trajectory as relevant to rank; (3) documented evidence of successful teaching, including support for teaching Spoken Arabic alongside MSA, and active engagement with students. We seek a candidate with demonstrated success in program/curricular development and the capacity to build the MENAS program.

The successful applicant will demonstrate interest in cross-cultural and content-based language learning, rooted in a command of contemporary Arabic culture; a commitment to diversity and inclusion; and interest in education outside of the traditional classroom, including in programs abroad, online instruction, or career and professional education and service learning. A secondary language specialization is of interest. The candidate will teach courses in Arabic and in his or her areas of specialization and will also contribute to the academic and research priorities of the School of Modern Languages, which include globalization, sustainability, and language use in professional contexts. For candidates seeking consideration at the Associate Professor level, qualifications should demonstrate merit for a tenured appointment.

Candidates will submit a statement of interest highlighting how they meet the job requirements, a current CV, a published writing sample, and a brief teaching portfolio, as well as three letters of reference, including at least one that can speak to language proficiency. Cover letter, CV, writing sample and teaching portfolio should be submitted in a single PDF document to arabichire@modlangs.gatech.edu. Please ask your three recommenders to send their letters of recommendation separately to arabichire@modlangs.gatech.edu. Review of applications will commence on October 15, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. Short-list interviews will be conducted virtually during the week of November 5, 2018.
